2023 Community Sentinel Awards for Environmental Stewardship

Fractracker Alliance and Halt the Harm Network invite us to attend the upcoming 2023 Community Sentinel Awards for Environmental Stewardship—an annual awards program hosted to honor grassroots environmental activists from across the United States for their efforts to protect communities and preserve the environment.This year’s event will be held both online and in person at the Phipps Environmental Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on Thursday, November 9, 2023

The Ceremony will feature keynote speaker Eliza Evans, creator of All the Way to Hell, an activist art project for disrupting fossil fuel development on private land in the U.S., as well as a performance by Tom Breiding, a celebrated musician from West Virginia who has performed his original ballads at commemorations of many of the most important labor events of the 20th century.
Established in 2015, the Sentinel Awards showcase the transformative power of grassroots activism by recognizing exemplary individuals nationwide who are championing causes to protect our planet and advocating for justice in their own communities.
This year’s winners are:
  • Gillian Graber – Executive Director and co-founder of Protect PT (Penn-Trafford) from Harrison City, Pennsylvania
  • Debra Ramirez – Founding member and activist with Mossville Environmental Action Now from Lake Charles, Louisiana
  • Maury Johnson – Board of Directors and Member of Preserve Monroe (WV) and WV Co-Chair of the Protect Our Water & Heritage Rights (POWHR) Coalition from Greenville, West Virginia
  • Sarah Martik – Executive Director of Center for Coalfield Justice from Canonsburg, Pennsylvania
  • Youth Awardee: Anaïs Peterson, Lead Petrochemicals Campaigner with Earthworks, from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
